A Special Announcement!

A Special Announcement from An Island Family By Grace

I might as well ‘cut to the chase’ with my special announcement! My husband and I are expecting our 5th child! We are really pleased, and the children are all very excited! Our youngest daughter, who is 7 years old, actually jumped up and down the day we told the children, shouting “I won’t be the youngest any more, I won’t be the youngest any more!”

After 7 years of not having any more babies, some things are quite different, such as what is recommended/ not recommended during pregnancy, and we also noticed at my ultrasound scan that the equipment was a lot more modern. However, after all the different things we have been through as a family during these years, we are just so happy to be looking forward to the new addition to our family!

I am currently 14 weeks pregnant, and the baby is due towards the end of September. I am thanking God that I have not been quite as ill as I was with all our other children, when I had hyperemesis gravidarum (severe pregnancy sickness), although I have still had strong nausea and some vomiting this time (sorry!). I am still feeling very sick at the moment, but am hoping it will not last for too much longer, as with each pregnancy it has lasted for progressively less time. With our youngest daughter it stopped at about 15 weeks, so here’s hoping!

So there is the explanation as to why there have not been many personal photos, or any outdoor photos in my posts over the last couple of months! I have jealously watched the children doing nature study outside, and I have missed being with our church fellowship for such a long time, but it is a temporary rest for a very good reason! It has been a huge blessing that we have had much better weather this February and March, so my husband and the children have been able to enjoy fresh air and exercise. And I have been able to enjoy the view!

We have continued homeschooling as usual, and the rest of the family has been very helpful in temporarily taking on extra housework tasks. I have also really been appreciating the half hour of ‘quiet activity time’ that I have mentioned before, as it has allowed me to have a wee nap after lunch!

I think that I may do an update on my healthy living goals for 2016 next week (don’t laugh too much!), but suffice it to say that they have changed! With regards to what I’m reading this year, I have slowed to a stop, other than the devotional book Praying the Names of God, which has been a real blessing in terms of keeping me in the routine of reading the Bible and praying every day. The children and I have continued with our read aloud books after Bible time each morning, which is the time of day that I feel best, anyway.

I have been pinning some pregnancy articles that I like to my Pregnancy board on Pinterest, including quite a few on ‘morning’ sickness!

So, I will let you know how I am getting on periodically, and I would appreciate any advice from anyone else who has had a baby much later than their older children!

  1. Lovely news, congratulations!
We have 15 years between our eldest and our youngest although only just over two years between the younger two. The older children are very good with the younger ones and we have our own baby sitters!

  2. Congratulations Gwen! I’m glad you’re not feeling too sick this time. My morning sickness got progressively worse with each one, and by our 4th it was really severe and lasted the entire 9 months! Our other kids were 9, 6 and 4 when our 4th was born, and they were so helpful with the baby. It was great not having anyone else still in nappies, and not having a toddler and a baby at the same time. However, I think it was hard just being that bit older myself, and not having as much energy for the sleepless nights etc, so give yourself a lot of grace in the early days and don’t worry if you don’t get as much done, including homeschooling. They’ll be learning so much about babies and childcare that it won’t matter if they don’t get all their scheduled books read for a year or two! I hope the rest of the pregnacy goes smoothly and that you’ll be feeling better soon xx

  3. Congratulations! We have 5 children as well. Sorry you’re not feeling well, hopefully it will pass soon! Linking up with you at Monday Musings.

  4. Congratulations! Such joy from your 7 year old!! I have never been here but was drawn and so glad I felt that pull!
Will be holding you and your family in prayer.

  5. Oh Gwen, what wonderful news, congratulations, another little blessing to love. I’m sorry about your morning sickness and I’m praying that it ends very soon. Our oldest was 15 and our youngest 10 when we had baby no 3. I was nearly 40 and I was so much more relaxed, I didn’t try to be super mum like I did the first and second time. Our oldest daughter at 15 was a fabulous help and knew much more about having babies and caring for them when she had her first one than I ever did. I look forward to hearing how it all goes. Blessings to you and your lovely family xxxx

    • Thank you Terri! It is really encouraging to hear about your family. I will be 39 when this baby is born, which is a bit different to when our eldest was born and I was 24! Definitely won’t be trying to be supermum, that’s for sure 😉 Thanks so much for your comment.

  6. That’s the most terrific, wonderful, awesome, glorious news! I truly so happy for your family—especially your youngest! ~smile~

May God provide everything you need—especially rest!

    • Thank you Claire, I really appreciate that. My family are making sure I rest at all opportunities!

  7. Hi Gwen,
What a blessing…your quiver is filling up, haha!
I have just stumbled on your page and have spent the whole evening reading your posts. So brilliant how you list your curriculum materials. Will look forward to reading more over the coming days.
I am a married Christian mother of 5. Oddly, we had our fifth last December, when my fourth was 7! Although I felt more tired during the fifth pregnancy, it has been an absolute joy since Micah arrived. The other kids are still utterly besotted and love spending time with him. They have not found helping to look after him a chore at all (phew!!). This genuinely has been the easiest transition yet and we all feel so blessed by the joy Micah has brought.
Pray everything will go smoothly and look forward to reading your posts to come.
    Love in Christ
    Gaynor

    • That is lovely, Gaynor. How nice to hear how your other children have welcomed him. Thank you so much for your encouragement, and your prayers- our little girl was born at the start of this week, and all went very well- praise God! I will post a couple of photos on Monday 🙂
